DEARBORN — A local family is frustrated with Beaumont Hospital- Dearborn (formerly Oakwood Hospital- Dearborn) regarding the treatment of an elderly relative who has remained hospitalized for more than 18 months. Amine Zriek, 86, had been diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in 2009, due to 50 years of heavy smoking. From the front page of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune: Abuses of the elder guardianship system documented in recent Herald-Tribune articles are prompting local court officials to consider creating a new oversight position. Walt Smith, the court administrator for Florida’s 12th Judicial Circuit covering Sarasota, Manatee and Desoto counties, and incoming chief Judge Charles Williams proposed a plan Wednesday to hire a monitor who would investigate complaints about guardians.
