Florida’s 12th Judicial District creates overseer for guardianship

Abuses of the elder guardianship system documented in recent Herald-Tribune articles are prompting local court officials to consider creating a new oversight position.

Walt Smith, the court administrator for Florida’s 12th Judicial Circuit covering Sarasota, Manatee and Desoto counties, and incoming chief Judge Charles Williams proposed a plan Wednesday to hire a monitor who would investigate complaints about guardians.

The two officials presented the proposal to the Sarasota County Commission as part of their budget request for the 2016 fiscal year.

“Based on the series of articles your paper wrote you can see there is a need for independent eyes to investigate allegations,” Williams told a Herald-Tribune reporter after the meeting.
